13:23 whom Jesus loved. This reference appears in 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20, and has generally been understood to be John, the author of the Gospel. The remark does not imply a lack of love for the other disciples, but indicates a special affinity for John (19:26, 27).
close to Jesus. In a formal banquet people were not seated but reclined at the table (Luke 22:14 note). John’s position would not be unusual on such an occasion.
