26:69–75 Peter’s three denials are recorded in all four Gospels (Mark 14:66–72; Luke 22:54–62; John 18:15–18, 25–27), although the accounts differ in certain details. Peter’s oaths (vv. 72, 74) mean that he appealed to God to witness to something that was not true (see 5:33–37; Ex. 20:7). All the Gospels record this incident, showing how deeply it impressed the mind of the early church. It is a testimony both to human weakness and the greatness of God’s mercy.
