2:5 you will understand . . . Lord. In 1:7 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, and here it is the goal. There is no discrepancy, since wisdom is both a gift and a task. God gives knowledge of Himself in redemptive revelation. Starting here, the wise person takes up the task of learning more wisdom and of knowing God, always moving toward the goal of knowing Him more perfectly and being conformed to the image of His Son.
