Ps. 113 God is both transcendent (vv. 4–6) and immanent (vv. 7–9); above creation but present with His people. Ps. 113 is the first of several psalms used to celebrate the great annual festivals of Passover, Weeks, Tabernacles, New Moon, and the Dedication of the temple. Ps. 113–118 were sung during the Passover, so it is likely that Jesus and His disciples sang them during their last evening together (Matt. 26:30; Mark 14:26). Ps. 113 (see v. 9) should be compared with the songs of Hannah (1 Sam. 2, especially vv. 5, 8) and Mary (Luke 1:46–55).
