Letter of Jeremiah 40

In addition, even the Chaldeans dishonor them. When they see a person who is unable to speak, they bring out Bel and expect Bel to make a sound as if he were able to understand.
Why then must anyone think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chaldeans themselves dishonour them; for when they see someone who cannot speak, they bring Bel and pray that the mute may speak, as though Bel were able to understand!
Yet they themselves cannot perceive this and abandon them, for they have no sense.
Why then must any one think that they are gods, or call them gods? Besides, even the Chalde′ans themselves dishonor them;
How therefore is it to guess, either to say [or to be said], that they be gods? for why yet when (even the) Chaldeans honour not them.
