In fact, he taught only by illustrations in his public teaching, but afterwards, when he was alone with his disciples, he would explain his meaning to them.
With many stories like these, he presented his message to them, fitting the stories to their experience and maturity. He was never without a story when he spoke. When he was alone with his disciples, he went over everything, sorting out the tangles, untying the knots.
Without a parable He did not speak to them. But when they were alone, He expounded on all things to His disciples.

But apart from a parable, He wasn’t speaking to them. Yet when they were alone, to His own disciples He would explain everything.
This was the only way He taught them, although when He was alone with His chosen few, He interpreted all the stories so the disciples truly understood.
Without a parable he didn’t speak to them; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.
He did not tell them anything without a story. When he was alone with his disciples, he told them the meaning of the stories.
