In summary, the armies of Israel totaled 603,550 (not including the Levites, who were exempted by Jehovah’s commandment to Moses).
These are the People of Israel, counted according to their ancestral families. The total number in the camps, counted troop by troop, comes to 603,550. Following God’s command to Moses, the Levites were not counted in with the rest of Israel.

Soothly the deacons were not numbered among the sons of Israel; for God commanded so to Moses. (But the Levites were not listed, or were not registered, among the Israelites; for God had so commanded to Moses.)
And the Levites have not numbered themselves in the midst of the sons of Israel, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
