They will stand a long way off because they are afraid of the pain she suffers, and they will say, ‘Oh, the horror! Babylon, you great city, you powerful city! In a single hour your judgment has come.’
They will be afraid of her ·suffering [torment; torture] and stand far away and say: “·Terrible! How terrible for you [L Woe, woe; 8:13], great city, ·powerful [strong; mighty] city of Babylon, because your ·punishment [judgment; doom] has come ·in one hour [suddenly]!”
Frightened by the torture that she experiences, they will stand far away and cry out, “How terrible, how terrible it is for that great city, the powerful city Babylon, because your judgment arrived in a single hour!”
Then the kings of the earth, who debauched and indulged themselves with her, will wail and lament over her. Standing at a safe distance through very fear of her torment, they will watch the smoke of her burning and cry, “Alas, alas for the great city, Babylon the mighty city, that your judgment should come in a single hour.”
“The kings of the earth will see the smoke of her burning, and they’ll cry and carry on, the kings who went night after night to her brothel. They’ll keep their distance for fear they’ll get burned, and they’ll cry their lament: Doom, doom, the great city doomed! City of Babylon, strong city! In one hour it’s over, your judgment come!
They will be terrified by her suffering. They will stand far away from her. And they will cry out, “ ‘How terrible! How terrible it is for you, great city! How terrible for you, mighty city of Babylon! In just one hour you have been destroyed!’
They will stand at a distance, fearing they, too, might fall victim to her torment. They will moan, Woe to you, our great city! Babylon, the most powerful city in the world. In a single hour, your day of judgment has come.
