This is the jubilant city that lives in security, that says to herself: I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by her scoffs and shakes his fist.
This is the jubilant city, the one dwelling securely, the one saying in her heart, I, and no one else, will endure forever. How she has become a desolation, a resting place for the wild animals. All those who pass through her hiss and shake their fist.
This is the city, once so joyful, whose people felt themselves secure, who used to say to herself, “I am [the greatest]! I have no rival.” What a ruin she has become — a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone passing by her hisses and shakes his fist!
This is the glorious city that felt secure and said, “I am the only one!” Now it's merely ruins, a home for wild animals. Every passerby simply sneers and makes vulgar signs.
This is the rejoicing city that dwelt in security, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none else beside me: how is she become a desolation, a couching-place for beasts! Every one that passeth by her shall hiss, shall wave his hand.

Nineveh is so proud now. It is such a happy city. The people think they are safe. They think Nineveh is the greatest place in the world, but it will be destroyed! It will be an empty place where only wild animals go to rest. People who pass by will whistle and shake their heads when they see how badly the city was destroyed.
All this will happen to that city, the proud city. That city's people said in their minds, ‘Here we are. We are greater than all the other people.’ But then, other people will destroy their city! Only bits of it will still be there. Then wild animals will come and they will lie down in it. People will see this. So any people who pass by the city will make noises with their lips. And they will hold their fists up. In this way, they will show that they think bad things about the city.
This was the smug city that lived securely, that said to herself, “I am all there is. There are none that compare to me.” What a heap of ruins she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by taunts her and shakes his fist.

Is this the arrogant city? Is this the city that used to live securely, the city that used to think to itself, “I’m the only one, and no one else exists but me”? What a wasteland it is now, a resting place for wild animals! All who pass by it will hiss and make an obscene gesture.
That is what will happen to the city that is so proud of its own power and thinks it is safe. Its people think that their city is the greatest in the world. What a desolate place it will become, a place where wild animals will rest! Everyone who passes by will shrink back in horror.
This is the self-assured city that lives in security, that thinks to herself: I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by her jeers and shakes his fist.
This is the happy and safe city. It thinks there is no one else as strong as it is. But that city will be destroyed. Only animals will stay there. Those who pass by will make fun and shake their fists.
This is that carefree city that lived irresponsibly, that told herself, ‘Me first!’ and, ‘There will be no one else!’ How ruined she has become— a habitat for wild animals! Everyone who passes by her will sneer at her and make obscene gestures!”

Everyone passing that way will mock or shake his head in disbelief.
Then God will reach into the north and destroy Assyria. He will waste Nineveh, leave her dry and treeless as a desert. The ghost town of a city, the haunt of wild animals, Nineveh will be home to raccoons and coyotes— they’ll bed down in its ruins. Owls will hoot in the windows, ravens will croak in the doorways— all that fancy woodwork now a perch for birds. Can this be the famous Fun City that had it made, That boasted, “I’m the Number-One City! I’m King of the Mountain!” So why is the place deserted, a lair for wild animals? Passersby hardly give it a look; they dismiss it with a gesture.

This is how the once-proud city will end up— the city that was so secure. She thought to herself, “I am unique! No one can compare to me!” What a heap of ruins she has become, a place where wild animals live! Everyone who passes by her taunts her and shakes his fist.
Nineveh was a carefree city. It lived in safety. It said to itself, “I am the one! No one is greater than I am.” But it has been destroyed. Wild animals make their home there. All those who pass by laugh and shake their fists at it.

This is the glorious city dwelling in trust, which said in her heart, I am, and there is none other more without me. How is it made unto desert, a couch of beast; each man that shall pass by it, shall hiss, and shall move his hand. (This is the glorious city living in false trust, which said in her heart, I am, and there is no other besides me. How it shall be made into a desert, or into a wilderness, yea, a den for beasts!
