The Death of Saul and His Sons

10 (A)Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers. Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died. Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together. And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army[a] had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people. 10 And they put his armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon. 11 But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all the valiant men arose and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.

13 So Saul died (B)for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also (C)consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He (D)did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and (E)turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

David Anointed King

11 (F)Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord your God said to you, (G)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, (H)according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.

David Takes Jerusalem

And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, (I)that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, (J)the inhabitants of the land. The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first (K)shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. And David (L)became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

David's Mighty Men

10 (M)Now these are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, (N)according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. 11 This is an account of David's mighty men: (O)Jashobeam, a (P)Hachmonite, was (Q)chief of the three.[b] He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time.

12 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of (R)Dodo, the Ahohite. 13 He was with David at Pas-dammim (S)when the Philistines were gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines. 14 But he took his[c] stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the Lord saved them by a great victory.

15 Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of Philistines was encamped in the (T)Valley of Rephaim. 16 David was then in the stronghold, and the (U)garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. 17 And David said longingly, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” 18 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the Lord 19 and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

20 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty.[d] And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. 21 He was the most renowned[e] of the thirty[f] and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three.

22 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man[g] of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 23 And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits[h] tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear (V)like a weaver's beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. 25 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.

26 The mighty men were (W)Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 27 Shammoth of Harod,[i] Helez the Pelonite, 28 Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, Abiezer of Anathoth, 29 Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30 Maharai of Netophah, Heled the son of Baanah of Netophah, 31 Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the people of Benjamin, Benaiah of Pirathon, 32 Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, 33 Azmaveth of Baharum, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, 34 Hashem[j] the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, 35 Ahiam the son of Sachar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur, 36 Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, 37 Hezro of Carmel, Naarai the son of Ezbai, 38 Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of (X)Hagri, 39 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, the armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 40 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 41 Uriah the Hittite, (Y)Zabad the son of Ahlai, 42 Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a leader of the Reubenites, and thirty with him, 43 Hanan the son of Maacah, and Joshaphat the Mithnite, 44 Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, 45 Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother, the Tizite, 46 Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai, and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, 47 Eliel, and Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

The Mighty Men Join David

12 (Z)Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war. They (AA)were bowmen and could shoot arrows and sling stones with either the right or the (AB)left hand; they were Benjaminites, (AC)Saul's kinsmen. The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, both sons of Shemaah of (AD)Gibeah; also Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; Beracah, Jehu of (AE)Anathoth, Ishmaiah of (AF)Gibeon, a mighty man among the thirty and a leader over the thirty; Jeremiah,[k] Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad of Gederah, Eluzai,[l] Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite; Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the (AG)Korahites; And Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were (AH)swift as gazelles upon the mountains: Ezer the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third, 10 Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth, 11 Attai sixth, Eliel seventh, 12 Johanan eighth, Elzabad ninth, 13 Jeremiah tenth, Machbannai eleventh. 14 These Gadites were officers of the army; the least was a (AI)match for a hundred men and the greatest for a thousand. 15 These are the men who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was (AJ)overflowing all its banks, and put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

16 And some of the men of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in friendship to help me, my heart will be joined to you; but if to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong in my hands, then may the God of our fathers see and rebuke you.” 18 Then (AK)the Spirit clothed (AL)Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said,

“We are yours, O David,
    and with you, O son of Jesse!
(AM)Peace, peace to you,
    and peace to your helpers!
    For your God helps you.”

Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.

19 Some of the men of Manasseh deserted to David (AN)when he came with the Philistines for the battle against Saul. (Yet he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines took counsel and sent him away, saying, (AO)“At peril to our heads he will desert to his master Saul.”) 20 As he went to Ziklag, these men of Manasseh deserted to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, chiefs of thousands in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against (AP)the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor and were commanders in the army. 22 For from day to day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army, like an army of God.

23 These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops (AQ)who came to David in Hebron (AR)to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, (AS)according to the word of the Lord. 24 The men of Judah bearing shield and spear were 6,800 armed troops. 25 Of the Simeonites, mighty men of valor for war, 7,100. 26 Of the Levites 4,600. 27 The prince Jehoiada, of the house of Aaron, and with him 3,700. 28 (AT)Zadok, a young man mighty in valor, and twenty-two commanders from his own fathers' house. 29 Of the Benjaminites, (AU)the kinsmen of Saul, 3,000, of whom the (AV)majority had to that point kept their allegiance to the house of Saul. 30 Of the Ephraimites 20,800, mighty men of valor, famous men in their fathers' houses. 31 Of the half-tribe of Manasseh 18,000, who were (AW)expressly named to come and make David king. 32 Of Issachar, men who (AX)had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command. 33 Of Zebulun 50,000 seasoned troops, (AY)equipped for battle with all the weapons of war, to help David[m] with (AZ)singleness of purpose. 34 Of Naphtali 1,000 commanders with whom were 37,000 men armed with shield and spear. 35 Of the Danites 28,600 men equipped for battle. 36 Of (BA)Asher 40,000 (BB)seasoned troops (BC)ready for battle. 37 Of the Reubenites and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh from beyond the Jordan, 120,000 men armed with all the weapons of war.

38 All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with (BD)a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a (BE)single mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. 40 And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, (BF)cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

The Ark Brought from Kiriath-Jearim

13 David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers (BG)who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, (BH)for we did not seek it[n] in the days of Saul.” All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.

Uzzah and the Ark

(BI)So David assembled all Israel (BJ)from the (BK)Nile[o] of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God (BL)from Kiriath-jearim. (BM)And David and all Israel went up to (BN)Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord who (BO)sits enthroned above the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of (BP)Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio[p] were driving the cart. And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and (BQ)lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.

And when they came to the threshing floor of (BR)Chidon, Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark, for the oxen stumbled. 10 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him down (BS)because he put out his hand to the ark, and (BT)he died there before God. 11 And David was angry because the Lord had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzza[q] to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, and he said, “How can I bring the ark of God home to me?” 13 So David did not take the ark home into the city of David, but took it aside to the house (BU)of Obed-edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the household of Obed-edom in his house three months. (BV)And the Lord blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.

David's Wives and Children

14 (BW)And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. (BX)These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: (BY)Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, (BZ)Beeliada and (CA)Eliphelet.

Philistines Defeated

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. Now the Philistines had come and (CB)made a raid in the (CC)Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through[r] my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 12 And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.

13 And the Philistines yet again (CD)made a raid in the valley. 14 And when David again inquired of God, (CE)God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the (CF)fear of him upon all nations.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

15 David[s] built houses for himself in the city of David. And he prepared a place for the ark of God and (CG)pitched a tent for it. Then David said that no one but the Levites may carry (CH)the ark of God, for the Lord had chosen them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister to him forever. (CI)And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord (CJ)to its place, which he had prepared for it. And David gathered together the sons of Aaron and (CK)the Levites: of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, with 120 of his brothers; of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, with 220 of his brothers; of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, with 130 of his brothers; of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, with 200 of his brothers; of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, with 80 of his brothers; 10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, with 112 of his brothers. 11 Then David summoned the priests (CL)Zadok and (CM)Abiathar, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, 12 and said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites. (CN)Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, so that you may bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, (CO)to the place that I have prepared for it. 13 (CP)Because you did not carry it the first time, the Lord our God broke out against us, because we did not seek him according to the rule.” 14 So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders (CQ)with the poles, (CR)as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.

16 David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on (CS)musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. 17 So the Levites appointed (CT)Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers (CU)Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, (CV)Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel. 19 The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, (CW)Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to (CX)Alamoth; 21 but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, (CY)Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to (CZ)the Sheminith. 22 Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it. 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should (DA)blow the trumpets before the ark of God. (DB)Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.

25 (DC)So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of (DD)Obed-edom with rejoicing. 26 And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed (DE)seven bulls and seven rams. 27 David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod. 28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, (DF)trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on (DG)harps and lyres.

29 And as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David dancing and celebrating, and she despised him in her heart.

The Ark Placed in a Tent

16 And they brought in the ark of God and set it inside (DH)the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord and distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat,[t] and a cake of raisins.

Then he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel. (DI)Asaph was the chief, and second to him were Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, who were to play harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. Then on that day (DJ)David first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord by Asaph and his brothers.

David's Song of Thanks

(DK)Oh give thanks to the Lord; (DL)call upon his name;
    (DM)make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
    tell of all his wondrous works!
10 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
11 (DN)Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually!
12 (DO)Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
    (DP)his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
13 O offspring of Israel his servant,
    children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

14 He is the Lord our God;
    (DQ)his judgments are in all the earth.
15 Remember his covenant forever,
    the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
16 the covenant (DR)that he made with Abraham,
    his sworn promise to Isaac,
17 which (DS)he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
18 saying, (DT)“To you I will give the land of Canaan,
    as your portion for an inheritance.”

19 When you were (DU)few in number,
    of little account, and (DV)sojourners in it,
20 wandering from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another people,
21 he allowed no one to oppress them;
    he (DW)rebuked kings on their account,
22 saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,
    do my (DX)prophets no harm!”

23 (DY)Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
    Tell of his salvation from day to day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
25 For (DZ)great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and he is to be feared (EA)above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    (EB)but the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    (EC)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come before him!
(ED)Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;[u]
30     tremble before him, all the earth;
    yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
31 (EE)Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
    and let them say among the nations, (EF)“The Lord reigns!”
32 (EG)Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    let the field exult, and everything in it!
33 Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
    before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
34 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

35 (EH)Say also:

“Save us, O God of our salvation,
    and gather and deliver us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.
36 (EI)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!”

(EJ)Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

Worship Before the Ark

37 So David left Asaph and his brothers there (EK)before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark (EL)as each day required, 38 and also (EM)Obed-edom and his[v] sixty-eight brothers, while (EN)Obed-edom, the son of Jeduthun, and (EO)Hosah were to be gatekeepers. 39 And he left (EP)Zadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord (EQ)in the high place that was at Gibeon 40 to offer burnt offerings to the Lord (ER)on the altar of burnt offering (ES)regularly morning and evening, to do all that is written in the Law of the Lord that he commanded Israel. 41 With them were (ET)Heman and Jeduthun (EU)and the rest of those chosen and (EV)expressly named to give thanks to the Lord, (EW)for his steadfast love endures forever. 42 Heman and Jeduthun had trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments (EX)for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.

43 (EY)Then all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household.

The Lord's Covenant with David

17 (EZ)Now when David lived in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.” And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”

But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: (FA)It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in. For I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up Israel to this day, (FB)but I have gone from tent to tent and from dwelling to dwelling. In all places where I have moved with all Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, 10 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I (FC)will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the Lord will build you a house. 11 When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 (FD)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, (FE)as I took it from him who was before you, 14 but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’” 15 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David's Prayer

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 17 And this was a small thing in your eyes, O God. You have also spoken of your servant's house for a great while to come, and have shown me future generations,[w] O Lord God! 18 And what more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant. 19 (FF)For your servant's sake, O Lord, and according to your own heart, you have done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 20 There is none like you, O Lord, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel, the one[x] nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making for yourself a name for great and awesome things, in driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 And you made your people Israel to be your people forever, and you, O Lord, became their God. 23 And now, O Lord, let the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as you have spoken, 24 and your name will be established and magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel's God,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 25 For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26 And now, O Lord, you are God, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O Lord, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”

Saul Takes His Life(A)

10 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.”

But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon.(B)

11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead(C) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

13 Saul died(D) because he was unfaithful(E) to the Lord; he did not keep(F) the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium(G) for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned(H) the kingdom(I) over to David son of Jesse.

David Becomes King Over Israel(J)

11 All Israel(K) came together to David at Hebron(L) and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns.(M) And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd(N) my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.(O)’”

When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(P) David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.

David Conquers Jerusalem(Q)

David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites(R) who lived there said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.

David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab(S) son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.

David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. He built up the city around it, from the terraces[a](T) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. And David became more and more powerful,(U) because the Lord Almighty was with him.

David’s Mighty Warriors(V)

10 These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel,(W) gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised(X) 11 this is the list of David’s mighty warriors:(Y)

Jashobeam,[b] a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers[c]; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.

12 Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors. 13 He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. 14 But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.(Z)

15 Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley(AA) of Rephaim. 16 At that time David was in the stronghold,(AB) and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured(AC) it out to the Lord. 19 “God forbid that I should do this!” he said. “Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it.

Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

20 Abishai(AD) the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 21 He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.

22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel,(AE) performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.(AF) 23 And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits[d] tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s rod(AG) in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 24 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 25 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

26 The mighty warriors were:

Asahel(AH) the brother of Joab,

Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

27 Shammoth(AI) the Harorite,

Helez the Pelonite,

28 Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,

Abiezer(AJ) from Anathoth,

29 Sibbekai(AK) the Hushathite,

Ilai the Ahohite,

30 Maharai the Netophathite,

Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,

31 Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah in Benjamin,

Benaiah(AL) the Pirathonite,(AM)

32 Hurai from the ravines of Gaash,

Abiel the Arbathite,

33 Azmaveth the Baharumite,

Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

34 the sons of Hashem the Gizonite,

Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite,

35 Ahiam son of Sakar the Hararite,

Eliphal son of Ur,

36 Hepher the Mekerathite,

Ahijah the Pelonite,

37 Hezro the Carmelite,

Naarai son of Ezbai,

38 Joel the brother of Nathan,

Mibhar son of Hagri,

39 Zelek the Ammonite,

Naharai the Berothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,

40 Ira the Ithrite,

Gareb the Ithrite,

41 Uriah(AN) the Hittite,

Zabad(AO) son of Ahlai,

42 Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, who was chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him,

43 Hanan son of Maakah,

Joshaphat the Mithnite,

44 Uzzia the Ashterathite,(AP)

Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,

45 Jediael son of Shimri,

his brother Joha the Tizite,

46 Eliel the Mahavite,

Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam,

Ithmah the Moabite,

47 Eliel, Obed and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

Warriors Join David

12 These were the men who came to David at Ziklag,(AQ) while he was banished from the presence of Saul son of Kish (they were among the warriors who helped him in battle; they were armed with bows and were able to shoot arrows or to sling stones right-handed or left-handed;(AR) they were relatives of Saul(AS) from the tribe of Benjamin):

Ahiezer their chief and Joash the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berakah, Jehu the Anathothite, and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the Thirty, who was a leader of the Thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,[e](AT) Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah the Haruphite; Elkanah, Ishiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam the Korahites; and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham from Gedor.(AU)

Some Gadites(AV) defected to David at his stronghold in the wilderness. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions,(AW) and they were as swift as gazelles(AX) in the mountains.

Ezer was the chief,

Obadiah the second in command, Eliab the third,

10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,

11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,

12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,

13 Jeremiah the tenth and Makbannai the eleventh.

14 These Gadites were army commanders; the least was a match for a hundred,(AY) and the greatest for a thousand.(AZ) 15 It was they who crossed the Jordan in the first month when it was overflowing all its banks,(BA) and they put to flight everyone living in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

16 Other Benjamites(BB) and some men from Judah also came to David in his stronghold. 17 David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, I am ready for you to join me. But if you have come to betray me to my enemies when my hands are free from violence, may the God of our ancestors see it and judge you.”

18 Then the Spirit(BC) came on Amasai,(BD) chief of the Thirty, and he said:

“We are yours, David!
    We are with you, son of Jesse!
Success,(BE) success to you,
    and success to those who help you,
        for your God will help you.”

So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.

19 Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, “It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.”)(BF) 20 When David went to Ziklag,(BG) these were the men of Manasseh who defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Zillethai, leaders of units of a thousand in Manasseh. 21 They helped David against raiding bands, for all of them were brave warriors, and they were commanders in his army. 22 Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God.[f]

Others Join David at Hebron

23 These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron(BH) to turn(BI) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:(BJ)

24 from Judah, carrying shield and spear—6,800 armed for battle;

25 from Simeon, warriors ready for battle—7,100;

26 from Levi—4,600, 27 including Jehoiada, leader of the family of Aaron, with 3,700 men, 28 and Zadok,(BK) a brave young warrior, with 22 officers from his family;

29 from Benjamin,(BL) Saul’s tribe—3,000, most(BM) of whom had remained loyal to Saul’s house until then;

30 from Ephraim, brave warriors, famous in their own clans—20,800;

31 from half the tribe of Manasseh, designated by name to come and make David king—18,000;

32 from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do(BN)—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;

33 from Zebulun, experienced soldiers prepared for battle with every type of weapon, to help David with undivided loyalty—50,000;

34 from Naphtali—1,000 officers, together with 37,000 men carrying shields and spears;

35 from Dan, ready for battle—28,600;

36 from Asher, experienced soldiers prepared for battle—40,000;

37 and from east of the Jordan, from Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed with every type of weapon—120,000.

38 All these were fighting men who volunteered to serve in the ranks. They came to Hebron fully determined to make David king over all Israel.(BO) All the rest of the Israelites were also of one mind to make David king. 39 The men spent three days there with David, eating and drinking,(BP) for their families had supplied provisions for them. 40 Also, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun and Naphtali came bringing food on donkeys, camels, mules and oxen. There were plentiful supplies(BQ) of flour, fig cakes, raisin(BR) cakes, wine, olive oil, cattle and sheep, for there was joy(BS) in Israel.

Bringing Back the Ark(BT)

13 David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. Let us bring the ark of our God back to us,(BU) for we did not inquire(BV) of[g] it[h] during the reign of Saul.” The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.

So David assembled all Israel,(BW) from the Shihor River(BX) in Egypt to Lebo Hamath,(BY) to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.(BZ) David and all Israel went to Baalah(CA) of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the Lord, who is enthroned between the cherubim(CB)—the ark that is called by the Name.

They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s(CC) house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, timbrels, cymbals and trumpets.(CD)

When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger(CE) burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down(CF) because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

11 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.[i](CG)

12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?” 13 He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom(CH) the Gittite. 14 The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the Lord blessed his household(CI) and everything he had.

David’s House and Family(CJ)

14 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs,(CK) stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted(CL) for the sake of his people Israel.

In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons(CM) and daughters. These are the names of the children born to him there:(CN) Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada[j] and Eliphelet.

David Defeats the Philistines(CO)

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel,(CP) they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them. Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley(CQ) of Rephaim; 10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”

The Lord answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”

11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim,(CR) and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.[k] 12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn(CS) them in the fire.(CT)

13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley;(CU) 14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees. 15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” 16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon(CV) to Gezer.(CW)

17 So David’s fame(CX) spread throughout every land, and the Lord made all the nations fear(CY) him.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem(CZ)

15 After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared(DA) a place for the ark of God and pitched(DB) a tent for it. Then David said, “No one but the Levites(DC) may carry(DD) the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister(DE) before him forever.”

David assembled all Israel(DF) in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place he had prepared for it. He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites:(DG)

From the descendants of Kohath,

Uriel(DH) the leader and 120 relatives;

from the descendants of Merari,

Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives;

from the descendants of Gershon,[l]

Joel the leader and 130 relatives;

from the descendants of Elizaphan,(DI)

Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives;

from the descendants of Hebron,(DJ)

Eliel the leader and 80 relatives;

10 from the descendants of Uzziel,

Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives.

11 Then David summoned Zadok(DK) and Abiathar(DL) the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. 12 He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate(DM) yourselves and bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 It was because you, the Levites,(DN) did not bring it up the first time that the Lord our God broke out in anger against us.(DO) We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way.(DP) 14 So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the Lord, the God of Israel. 15 And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded(DQ) in accordance with the word of the Lord.(DR)

16 David(DS) told the leaders of the Levites(DT) to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians(DU) to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.(DV)

17 So the Levites appointed Heman(DW) son of Joel; from his relatives, Asaph(DX) son of Berekiah; and from their relatives the Merarites,(DY) Ethan son of Kushaiah; 18 and with them their relatives next in rank: Zechariah,[m] Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom(DZ) and Jeiel,[n] the gatekeepers.

19 The musicians Heman,(EA) Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Jaaziel,[o] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth,[p] 21 and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith.[q] 22 Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it.

23 Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets(EB) before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark.

25 So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark(EC) of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. 26 Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams(ED) were sacrificed. 27 Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the musicians, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod.(EE) 28 So all Israel(EF) brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts,(EG) with the sounding of rams’ horns(EH) and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.

29 As the ark of the covenant of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart.

Ministering Before the Ark(EI)(EJ)(EK)

16 They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched(EL) for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(EM) the people in the name of the Lord. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(EN) to each Israelite man and woman.

He appointed some of the Levites to minister(EO) before the ark of the Lord, to extol,[r] thank, and praise the Lord, the God of Israel: Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel,[s] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.

That day David first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise(EP) to the Lord in this manner:

Give praise(EQ) to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations(ER) what he has done.
Sing to him, sing praise(ES) to him;
    tell of all his wonderful acts.
10 Glory in his holy name;(ET)
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
11 Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek(EU) his face always.

12 Remember(EV) the wonders(EW) he has done,
    his miracles,(EX) and the judgments he pronounced,
13 you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
    his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
14 He is the Lord our God;
    his judgments(EY) are in all the earth.

15 He remembers[t](EZ) his covenant forever,
    the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
16 the covenant(FA) he made with Abraham,
    the oath he swore to Isaac.
17 He confirmed it to Jacob(FB) as a decree,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
18 “To you I will give the land of Canaan(FC)
    as the portion you will inherit.”

19 When they were but few in number,(FD)
    few indeed, and strangers in it,
20 they[u] wandered(FE) from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another.
21 He allowed no one to oppress them;
    for their sake he rebuked kings:(FF)
22 “Do not touch my anointed ones;
    do my prophets(FG) no harm.”

23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
    proclaim his salvation day after day.
24 Declare his glory(FH) among the nations,
    his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

25 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(FI)
    he is to be feared(FJ) above all gods.(FK)
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
    but the Lord made the heavens.(FL)
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.(FM)
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;(FN)
    bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[v] holiness.(FO)
30     Tremble(FP) before him, all the earth!
    The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.(FQ)

31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;(FR)
    let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!(FS)
32 Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;(FT)
    let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
33 Let the trees(FU) of the forest sing,
    let them sing for joy before the Lord,
    for he comes to judge(FV) the earth.

34 Give thanks(FW) to the Lord, for he is good;(FX)
    his love endures forever.(FY)
35 Cry out, “Save us, God our Savior;(FZ)
    gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
    and glory in your praise.”
36 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(GA)
    from everlasting to everlasting.

Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the Lord.”

37 David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each day’s requirements.(GB) 38 He also left Obed-Edom(GC) and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah,(GD) were gatekeepers.

39 David left Zadok(GE) the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeon(GF) 40 to present burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law(GG) of the Lord, which he had given Israel. 41 With them were Heman(GH) and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord, “for his love endures forever.” 42 Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song.(GI) The sons of Jeduthun(GJ) were stationed at the gate.

43 Then all the people left, each for their own home, and David returned home to bless his family.

God’s Promise to David(GK)

17 After David was settled in his palace, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under a tent.(GL)

Nathan replied to David, “Whatever you have in mind,(GM) do it, for God is with you.”

But that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying:

“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord says: You(GN) are not the one to build me a house to dwell in. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought Israel up out of Egypt to this day. I have moved from one tent site to another, from one dwelling place to another. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their leaders[w] whom I commanded to shepherd my people, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?(GO)”’

“Now then, tell my servant David, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler(GP) over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 10 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders(GQ) over my people Israel. I will also subdue all your enemies.

“‘I declare to you that the Lord will build a house for you: 11 When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build(GR) a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever.(GS) 13 I will be his father,(GT) and he will be my son.(GU) I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14 I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne(GV) will be established forever.(GW)’”

15 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.

David’s Prayer(GX)

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

18 “What more can David say to you for honoring your servant? For you know your servant, 19 Lord. For the sake(GY) of your servant and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made known all these great promises.(GZ)

20 “There is no one like you, Lord, and there is no God but you,(HA) as we have heard with our own ears. 21 And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem(HB) a people for himself, and to make a name for yourself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 You made your people Israel your very own forever,(HC) and you, Lord, have become their God.

23 “And now, Lord, let the promise(HD) you have made concerning your servant and his house be established forever. Do as you promised, 24 so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever. Then people will say, ‘The Lord Almighty, the God over Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And the house of your servant David will be established before you.

25 “You, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him. So your servant has found courage to pray to you. 26 You, Lord, are God! You have promised these good things to your servant. 27 Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight;(HE) for you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.”
