³⁰ Therefore Yahweh, the God of Israel, declares, ‘^(A)I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father should walk before Me forever’; but now Yahweh declares, ‘Far be it from Me—for ^(B)those who honor Me I will honor, and those ^(C)who despise Me will be cursed.

²⁹ Now it happened at that time, that Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, and ^(A)that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now ^[a]he had covered himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field. ³⁰ Then ^(B)Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him and tore it into twelve pieces. ³¹ And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, ^(C)I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes,

¹⁵ So the king did not listen to the people; ^(A)for it was a turn of events from Yahweh, ^(B)that He might establish His word, which Yahweh spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Israel Rebels Against Judah

¹⁶ Then all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them. So the people responded to the king with this word, saying,

So Israel went to their tents.

²⁰ Now it happened when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent and called him to the congregation and made him king over all Israel. ^(A)None but the tribe of Judah followed the house of David.

^15 (A)They also rejected His statutes and ^(B)His covenant which He cut with their fathers and His warnings with which He warned them. And ^(C)they followed vanity and ^(D)became vain, and went after the nations which surrounded them, concerning which ^(E)Yahweh had commanded them not to do like them.

²¹ When ^(A)He had torn Israel from the house of David, ^(B)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then ^(C)Jeroboam drove Israel away from following Yahweh and made them sin a great sin.
