The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur.(A) And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She said, “I am running away from my mistress Sarai.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her.” 10 The angel of the Lord also said to her, “I will so greatly multiply your offspring that they cannot be counted for multitude.”(B) 11 And the angel of the Lord said to her,

“Now you have conceived and shall bear a son;
    you shall call him Ishmael,[a]
    for the Lord has given heed to your affliction.(C)

The angel of the Lord(A) found Hagar near a spring(B) in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.(C) And he said, “Hagar,(D) slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”(E)

“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.” 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”(F)

“You are now pregnant
    and you will give birth to a son.(H)
You shall name him(I) Ishmael,[a](J)
    for the Lord has heard of your misery.(K)
