Jeruzalem door Nebukadnezar veroverd

39 In de tiende maand van het negende regeringsjaar van koning Zedekia van Juda kwam koning Nebukadnezar met zijn hele leger terug naar Jeruzalem om de stad te belegeren. 2 Anderhalf jaar later, in de vierde maand, sloegen zij een bres in de stadsmuur en veroverden de stad. 3 De Babylonische legeraanvoerders trokken in triomf de stad binnen en namen plaats bij de Middenpoort. Daar zaten ze: hofmaarschalk Nebusazban en opperbevelhebber Nergalsarézer en alle overige leiders.

4 Toen koning Zedekia en zijn strijders hen zagen en begrepen dat de stad verloren was, vluchtten zij ʼs nachts door de poort tussen de twee muren aan de achterkant van de paleistuin over de velden in de richting van het Jordaandal. 5 Maar de Babyloniërs gingen de vluchtelingen achterna en haalden ze in op de vlakten van Jericho, waar zij de koning gevangennamen en naar koning Nebukadnezar brachten. Deze was in Ribla, in het land van Hamath. Daar sprak hij zijn vonnis over de koning uit. 6 De koning van Babel dwong Zedekia toe te kijken terwijl zijn kinderen en de vooraanstaande burgers van Juda werden gedood. 7 Daarna stak hij Zedekia de ogen uit, boeide hem met ijzeren ketens en zond hem naar Babel. 8 Intussen stak het leger het paleis en de huizen in brand en haalde de muren van Jeruzalem omver. 9 Daarna deporteerden Nebuzaradan, het hoofd van de lijfwacht, en zijn mannen de rest van de bevolking en de overlopers naar Babel. 10 Maar Nebuzaradan liet enkele van de armsten in het land achter en gaf hun akkers en wijngaarden.

11,12 Nebukadnezar had Nebuzaradan ook bevolen Jeremia op te zoeken. ‘Zorg ervoor dat hem niets overkomt,’ zei hij. ‘Zorg goed voor hem en geef hem alles wat hij wil.’ 13 Zo voerden Nebuzaradan, het hoofd van de lijfwacht, hofmaarschalk Nebusazban, opperbevelhebber Nergalsarézer en alle ondergeschikten het bevel van de koning uit. 14 Zij stuurden soldaten naar de gevangenis om Jeremia eruit te halen en stelden hem onder de hoede van Gedalja, de zoon van Ahikam en kleinzoon van Safan, die hem moest terugbrengen naar zijn huis. Zo bleef Jeremia bij de mensen die in het land waren achtergebleven.

15 Voordat de Babyloniërs kwamen, toen Jeremia nog in de gevangenis zat, had de Here hem de volgende boodschap gegeven: 16 ‘Geef deze boodschap door aan de Ethiopiër Ebed-Melech: de Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, zegt: Ik zal al mijn dreigementen tegen deze stad uitvoeren. Met eigen ogen zult u daarvan getuige zijn. 17 Maar u zal Ik redden. U zult niet worden gedood door de mensen voor wie u zo bang bent. 18 Als beloning voor uw vertrouwen in Mij zult u niet gedood worden. Ik zal uw leven redden en u in veiligheid brengen.’

De verovering van Jeruzalem

39 In de tiende maand van het jaar dat Zedekia negen jaar koning van Juda was, was koning Nebukadnezar van Babel met zijn hele leger bij Jeruzalem aangekomen. Hij omsingelde de stad. 2 En toen Zedekia elf jaar koning was, wisten de Babyloniërs de stad binnen te komen. Dat gebeurde op de negende dag van de vierde maand. 3 De legerleiding van de koning van Babel ging in de Middenpoort zitten. Dat waren de Samgarnebo[a] Nergalsareser, de Rabsaris Sarsechim, de Rabmag Nergalsareser en alle andere aanvoerders van de koning van Babel. 4 Toen koning Zedekia en zijn soldaten dat zagen, vluchtten ze. Via de paleistuin verlieten ze 's nachts de stad. Door de poort tussen de twee stadsmuren in vluchtten ze in de richting van de vlakte.

5 Maar het leger van de Babyloniërs kwam hen achterna. Ze haalden Zedekia in op de vlakte bij Jericho en namen hem gevangen. Ze brachten hem naar koning Nebukadnezar in de stad Ribla in het land van Hamat. Koning Nebukadnezar liet hem weten hoe hij hem zou straffen. 6 Daarna liet hij daar Zedekia's zonen voor zijn ogen doden. Ook alle leiders en belangrijke mensen liet hij doden. 7 Daarna liet hij Zedekia blind maken. Hij boeide hem met twee koperen ketenen en nam hem mee naar Babel. 8 De Babyloniërs staken het paleis en de huizen in brand. De muren van Jeruzalem braken ze af. 9 De aanvoerder van de lijfwacht, Nebuzaradan, nam alle mensen die in de stad waren overgebleven, gevangen mee naar Babel. Ook iedereen die naar Nebukadnezar was overgelopen. 10 Maar de allerarmste mensen, die helemaal niets hadden, liet hij in Juda achter. Hij gaf hun wijngaarden en akkers.

God redt Jeremia en Ebed-Melech

11 Koning Nebukadnezar had tegen Nebuzaradan gezegd 12 dat hij voor mij moest zorgen. Hij had gezegd: "Zorg voor Jeremia en doe hem geen kwaad. Geef hem alles waar hij om vraagt." 13 Nebuzaradan liet mij daarom door de Rabsaris Nebusazban, de Rabmag Nergalsarezer en nog een paar aanvoerders uit de gevangenis op de binnenplaats van het paleis halen. 14 Ze gaven Gedalja[b] bevel mij te laten gaan. Zo bleef ik achter in Juda.

15 In de tijd dat ik in de gevangenis van het paleis zat, had de Heer tegen mij gezegd: 16 "Zeg tegen de Ethiopiër Ebed-Melech: Dit zegt de Heer van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël: Ik zal doen wat Ik over deze stad gezegd heb. Alle rampen die Ik genoemd heb, zul je zien gebeuren. Ik zal niet langer goed zijn voor Jeruzalem. 17 Maar jou zal Ik redden, zegt de Heer. Je zal niet in de handen vallen van de mannen voor wie je zo bang bent. 18 Want Ik zal je bevrijden en je zal niet door hen worden gedood. Omdat je op Mij hebt vertrouwd, zul je in leven blijven, zegt de Heer."

39 1 In the ninth year of Zedekiah(A) king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar(B) king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege(C) to it. 2 And on the ninth day of the fourth(D) month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall(E) was broken through.(F) 3 Then all the officials(G) of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon. 4 When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls,(H) and headed toward the Arabah.[a](I)

5 But the Babylonian[b] army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah(J) in the plains of Jericho. They captured(K) him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah(L) in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him. 6 There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles(M) of Judah. 7 Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes(N) and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.(O)

8 The Babylonians[c] set fire(P) to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls(Q) of Jerusalem. 9 Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him,(R) and the rest of the people.(S) 10 But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.

11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard: 12 “Take him and look after him; don’t harm(T) him but do for him whatever he asks.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers(U) of the king of Babylon 14 sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard.(V) They turned him over to Gedaliah(W) son of Ahikam,(X) the son of Shaphan,(Y) to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.(Z)

15 While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him: 16 “Go and tell Ebed-Melek(AA) the Cushite, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfill my words(AB) against this city—words concerning disaster,(AC) not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes. 17 But I will rescue(AD) you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear. 18 I will save(AE) you; you will not fall by the sword(AF) but will escape with your life,(AG) because you trust(AH) in me, declares the Lord.’”

39 In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.

2 And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city was broken up.

3 And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, even Nergalsharezer, Samgarnebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris, Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, with all the residue of the princes of the king of Babylon.

4 And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain.

5 But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him.

6 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes: also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.

7 Moreover he put out Zedekiah's eyes, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon.

8 And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem.

9 Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained.

10 But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people, which had nothing, in the land of Judah, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

11 Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying,

12 Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm; but do unto him even as he shall say unto thee.

13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent, and Nebushasban, Rabsaris, and Nergalsharezer, Rabmag, and all the king of Babylon's princes;

14 Even they sent, and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home: so he dwelt among the people.

15 Now the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,

16 Go and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.

17 But I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid.

18 For I will surely deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword, but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee: because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.
