43 When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” 44 The man who had died came forth, (A)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (B)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

45 (C)Therefore many of the Jews (D)who came to Mary, and (E)saw what He had done, believed in Him. 46 But some of them went to the (F)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore (G)the chief priests and the Pharisees (H)convened a (I)council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many [a](J)signs. 48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our (K)place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, (L)Caiaphas, (M)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you take into account that (N)it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he did not say this [b]on his own initiative, but (O)being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (P)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they (Q)planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus (R)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called (S)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now (T)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover (U)to purify themselves. 56 So they (V)were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?” 57 Now (W)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him.

Mary Anoints Jesus

12 (A)Jesus, therefore, six days before (B)the Passover, came to (C)Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

17 So (A)the [a]people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him. 18 (B)For this reason also the [b]people went and met Him, (C)because they heard that He had performed this [c]sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.”

Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now there were some (D)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (E)the feast; 21 these then came to (F)Philip, who was from (G)Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip *came and *told (H)Andrew; Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. 23 And Jesus *answered them, saying, (I)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (J)be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, (K)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 (L)He who loves his [d]life loses it, and he who (M)hates his [e]life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 If anyone [f]serves Me, he must follow Me; and (N)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone [g]serves Me, the Father will (O)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27 (P)Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘(Q)Father, save Me from (R)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 (S)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a (T)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “(U)An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, (V)This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. 31 (W)Now judgment is upon this world; now (X)the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I (Y)am lifted up from the earth, will (Z)draw all men to Myself.” 33 But He was saying this (AA)to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard out of (AB)the Law that [h](AC)the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ‘The (AD)Son of Man must be (AE)lifted up’? Who is this (AF)Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (AG)For a little while longer (AH)the Light is among you. (AI)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who (AJ)walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36 While you have the Light, (AK)believe in the Light, so that you may become (AL)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and [i](AM)hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many [j]signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: “(AN)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 (AO)He has blinded their eyes and He (AP)hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and [k]be converted and I heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because (AQ)he saw His glory, and (AR)he spoke of Him. 42 Nevertheless (AS)many even of (AT)the rulers believed in Him, but (AU)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be [l](AV)put out of the synagogue; 43 (AW)for they loved the [m]approval of men rather than the [n]approval of God.

44 And Jesus cried out and said, (AX)He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 (AY)He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me. 46 (AZ)I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (BA)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 (BB)He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; (BC)the word I spoke is what will judge him at (BD)the last day. 49 (BE)For I did not speak [o]on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me (BF)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 I know that (BG)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (BH)just as the Father has told Me.”
