Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
4Â When Jesus[a] learned that the Pharisees(A) had heard he was making(B) and baptizing more disciples than John(C) 2Â (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), 3Â he left Judea(D) and went again to Galilee.(E) 4Â He had to travel through Samaria;(F) 5Â so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property[b] that Jacob(G) had given his son Joseph.(H) 6Â Jacobâs well(I) was there, and Jesus, worn out from his journey, sat down at the well. It was about noon.[c]
7Â A woman of Samaria came to draw water.(J)
âGive me a drink,â Jesus said to her, 8Â because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.
9Â âHow is it that you, a Jew,(K) ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan(L) woman?â she asked him. For Jews do not associate with[d] Samaritans.[e]
10Â Jesus answered, âIf you knew the gift of God,(M) and who is saying to you, âGive me a drink,â you would ask him, and he would give you living water.â(N)
11Â âSir,â(O) said the woman, âyou donât even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this âliving waterâ? 12Â You arenât greater than our father Jacob,(P) are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock.â
13Â Jesus said, âEveryone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14Â But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again.(Q) In fact, the water I will give him will become a well[f](R) of water springing up in him for eternal life.â(S)
15Â âSir,â the woman said to him, âgive me this water so that I wonât get thirsty and come here to draw water.â
16Â âGo call your husband,â he told her, âand come back here.â
17Â âI donât have a husband,â she answered.
âYou have correctly said, âI donât have a husband,ââ Jesus said. 18Â âFor youâve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.â
19Â âSir,â the woman replied, âI see that you are a prophet. 20Â Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(T) but you Jews say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.â(U)
21Â Jesus told her, âBelieve me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22Â You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.(V) 23Â But an hour is coming, and is now here,(W) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.[g] Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him. 24Â God is spirit,(X) and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth.â(Y)
25Â The woman said to him, âI know that the Messiah(Z) is comingâ (who is called Christ(AA)). âWhen he comes, he will explain everything to us.â
26Â Jesus told her, âI, the one speaking to you, am he.â(AB)
The Ripened Harvest
27Â Just then his disciples arrived, and they were amazed that he was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, âWhat do you want?â or âWhy are you talking with her?â
28Â Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the people, 29Â âCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?â (AC) 30Â They left the town and made their way to him.(AD)
31Â In the meantime the disciples kept urging him, âRabbi,(AE) eat something.â
32Â But he said, âI have food to eat that you donât know about.â
33Â The disciples said to one another, âCould someone have brought him something to eat?â
34Â âMy food is to do the will of him(AF) who sent me(AG) and to finish his work,â(AH) Jesus told them. 35Â âDonât you say, âThere are still four more months, and then comes the harvestâ? Listen to what Iâm telling you: Open[h] your eyes and look at the fields, because they are ready[i] for harvest. 36Â The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. 37Â For in this case the saying is true: âOne sows and another reaps.â(AJ) 38Â I sent you to reap what you didnât labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[j] their labor.â
The Savior of the World
39Â Now many Samaritans(AK) from that town believed in him because of what the woman said[k] when she testified,(AL) âHe told me everything I ever did.â 40Â So when the Samaritans came to him,(AM) they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41Â Many more believed because of what he said.[l] 42Â And they told the woman, âWe no longer believe because of what you said, since we have heard for ourselves and know that this really is the Savior(AN) of the world.â[m]
A Galilean Welcome
43Â After two days he left there for Galilee.(AO) 44Â (Jesus himself had testified(AP) that a prophet has no honor in his own country.(AQ)) 45Â When(AR) they entered Galilee, the Galileans(AS) welcomed him because they had seen everything he did in Jerusalem(AT) during the festival.(AU) For they also had gone to the festival.
The Second Sign: Healing an Officialâs Son
46Â He went again to Cana(AV) of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.(AW) 47Â When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea(AX) into Galilee, he went to him and pleaded with him to come down and heal his son, since he was about to die.
48Â Jesus told him, âUnless you people see signs and wonders,(AY) you will not believe.â(AZ)
49Â âSir,â(BA) the official said to him, âcome down before my boy dies.â
50Â âGo,â Jesus told him, âyour son will live.â The man believed what[n] Jesus said to him and departed.
51Â While he was still going down, his servants met him saying that his boy was alive. 52Â He asked them at what time he got better. âYesterday at one in the afternoon[o] the fever left him,â they answered. 53Â The father(BB) realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, âYour son will live.â So he himself believed, along with his whole household.
54Â Now this was also the second sign(BC) Jesus performed after he came from Judea to Galilee.(BD)

John 4
New International Version
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4Â Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(A)â 2Â although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3Â So he left Judea(B) and went back once more to Galilee.
4Â Now he had to go through Samaria.(C) 5Â So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(D) 6Â Jacobâs well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7Â When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, âWill you give me a drink?â(E) 8Â (His disciples had gone into the town(F) to buy food.)
9Â The Samaritan woman said to him, âYou are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?â (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])
10Â Jesus answered her, âIf you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.â(H)
11Â âSir,â the woman said, âyou have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Â Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?â
13Â Jesus answered, âEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14Â but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(K) welling up to eternal life.â(L)
15Â The woman said to him, âSir, give me this water so that I wonât get thirsty(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.â
16Â He told her, âGo, call your husband and come back.â
17Â âI have no husband,â she replied.
Jesus said to her, âYou are right when you say you have no husband. 18Â The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.â
19Â âSir,â the woman said, âI can see that you are a prophet.(N) 20Â Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,(O) but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.â(P)
21Â âWoman,â Jesus replied, âbelieve me, a time is coming(Q) when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.(R) 22Â You Samaritans worship what you do not know;(S) we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.(T) 23Â Yet a time is coming and has now come(U) when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit(V) and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24Â God is spirit,(W) and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.â
25Â The woman said, âI know that Messiahâ (called Christ)(X) âis coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.â
26Â Then Jesus declared, âI, the one speaking to youâI am he.â(Y)
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27Â Just then his disciples returned(Z) and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, âWhat do you want?â or âWhy are you talking with her?â
28Â Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29Â âCome, see a man who told me everything I ever did.(AA) Could this be the Messiah?â(AB) 30Â They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
31Â Meanwhile his disciples urged him, âRabbi,(AC) eat something.â
32Â But he said to them, âI have food to eat(AD) that you know nothing about.â
33Â Then his disciples said to each other, âCould someone have brought him food?â
34Â âMy food,â said Jesus, âis to do the will(AE) of him who sent me and to finish his work.(AF) 35Â Donât you have a saying, âItâs still four months until harvestâ? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.(AG) 36Â Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests(AH) a crop for eternal life,(AI) so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37Â Thus the saying âOne sows and another reapsâ(AJ) is true. 38Â I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.â
Many Samaritans Believe
39Â Many of the Samaritans from that town(AK) believed in him because of the womanâs testimony, âHe told me everything I ever did.â(AL) 40Â So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. 41Â And because of his words many more became believers.
42Â They said to the woman, âWe no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.â(AM)
Jesus Heals an Officialâs Son
43Â After the two days(AN) he left for Galilee. 44Â (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)(AO) 45Â When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,(AP) for they also had been there.
46Â Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.(AQ) And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47Â When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea,(AR) he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
48Â âUnless you people see signs and wonders,â(AS) Jesus told him, âyou will never believe.â
49Â The royal official said, âSir, come down before my child dies.â
50Â âGo,â Jesus replied, âyour son will live.â
The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51Â While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52Â When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, âYesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.â
53Â Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, âYour son will live.â So he and his whole household(AT) believed.
54Â This was the second sign(AU) Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

John 4
King James Version
4Â When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
2Â (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
3Â He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4Â And he must needs go through Samaria.
5Â Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6Â Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7Â There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8Â (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9Â Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10Â Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11Â The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12Â Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13Â Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14Â But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15Â The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16Â Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17Â The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18Â For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19Â The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20Â Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21Â Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Â Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23Â But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24Â God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25Â The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26Â Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27Â And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28Â The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29Â Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30Â Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31Â In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32Â But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33Â Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34Â Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35Â Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36Â And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37Â And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38Â I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39Â And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40Â So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41Â And many more believed because of his own word;
42Â And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
43Â Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
44Â For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
45Â Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
46Â So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47Â When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
48Â Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49Â The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50Â Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51Â And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52Â Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53Â So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54Â This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
John 4
New King James Version
A Samaritan Woman Meets Her Messiah
4Â Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and (A)baptized more disciples than John 2Â (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3Â He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4Â But He needed to go through Samaria.
5Â So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that (B)Jacob (C)gave to his son Joseph. 6Â Now Jacobâs well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7Â A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, âGive Me a drink.â 8Â For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9Â Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, âHow is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?â For (D)Jews have no dealings with (E)Samaritans.
10Â Jesus answered and said to her, âIf you knew the (F)gift of God, and who it is who says to you, âGive Me a drink,â you would have asked Him, and He would have given you (G)living water.â
11Â The woman said to Him, âSir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12Â Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?â
13Â Jesus answered and said to her, âWhoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14Â but (H)whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him (I)will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.â
15Â (J)The woman said to Him, âSir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.â
16Â Jesus said to her, âGo, call your husband, and come here.â
17Â The woman answered and said, âI have no husband.â
Jesus said to her, âYou have well said, âI have no husband,â 18Â for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.â
19Â The woman said to Him, âSir, (K)I perceive that You are a prophet. 20Â Our fathers worshiped on (L)this mountain, and you Jews say that in (M)Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.â
21Â Jesus said to her, âWoman, believe Me, the hour is coming (N)when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22Â You worship (O)what you do not know; we know what we worship, for (P)salvation is of the Jews. 23Â But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will (Q)worship the Father in (R)spirit (S)and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24Â (T)God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.â
25Â The woman said to Him, âI know that Messiah (U)is comingâ (who is called Christ). âWhen He comes, (V)He will tell us all things.â
26Â Jesus said to her, (W)âI who speak to you am He.â
The Whitened Harvest
27Â And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, âWhat do You seek?â or, âWhy are You talking with her?â
28Â The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29Â âCome, see a Man (X)who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?â 30Â Then they went out of the city and came to Him.
31Â In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, âRabbi, eat.â
32Â But He said to them, âI have food to eat of which you do not know.â
33Â Therefore the disciples said to one another, âHas anyone brought Him anything to eat?â
34Â Jesus said to them, (Y)âMy food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to (Z)finish His work. 35Â Do you not say, âThere are still four months and then comes (AA)the harvestâ? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, (AB)for they are already white for harvest! 36Â (AC)And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that (AD)both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37Â For in this the saying is true: (AE)âOne sows and another reaps.â 38Â I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; (AF)others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.â
The Savior of the World
39Â And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him (AG)because of the word of the woman who testified, âHe told me all that I ever did.â 40Â So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41Â And many more believed because of His own (AH)word.
42Â Then they said to the woman, âNow we believe, not because of what you said, for (AI)we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed [a]the Christ, the Savior of the world.â
Welcome at Galilee
43Â Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee. 44Â For (AJ)Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45Â So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, (AK)having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; (AL)for they also had gone to the feast.
A Noblemanâs Son Healed
46Â So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee (AM)where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain [b]nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47Â When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48Â Then Jesus said to him, (AN)âUnless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.â
49Â The nobleman said to Him, âSir, come down before my child dies!â
50Â Jesus said to him, âGo your way; your son lives.â So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51Â And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, âYour son lives!â
52Â Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, âYesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.â 53Â So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, âYour son lives.â And he himself believed, and his whole household.
54Â This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
