An Annual Atonement

29 This shall be a permanent statute for you: (A)in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble [a]yourselves and not (B)do any work, whether the native, or the stranger who resides among you; 30 for it is on this day that [b]atonement shall be made for you to (C)cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It is to be a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, so that you may (D)humble [c]yourselves; it is a permanent statute. 32 So the priest who is anointed and [d]ordained to serve as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement: he shall put on (E)the linen garments, the holy garments, 33 and make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also make atonement for (F)the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 Now you shall have this as a (G)permanent statute, to (H)make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once every year.” And just as the Lord had commanded Moses, so he did.

The Day of Atonement

26 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “On exactly (A)the tenth day of this seventh month is (B)the Day of Atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble [a]yourselves and present an offering by fire to the Lord. 28 You shall not do any work on this very day, for it is a (C)Day of Atonement, (D)to make atonement on your behalf before the Lord your God. 29 If there is any [b]person who does not humble himself on this very day, (E)he shall be cut off from his people. 30 As for any person who does any work on this very day, that person I will eliminate from among his people. 31 You shall not do any work. It is to be a permanent statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It is to be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall humble [c]yourselves; on the ninth of the month at evening, from evening until evening, you shall keep your Sabbath.”
