Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

⁵⁷ Those^(A) who had arrested Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas^(B) the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened. ⁵⁸ Meanwhile, Peter was following Him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard.^[a] He went in and was sitting with the temple police^[b] to see the outcome.^[c](C)

⁵⁹ The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death.^{(D) 60} But they could not find any, even though many false witnesses^(E) came forward.^[d] Finally, two^[e] who came forward ⁶¹ stated, “This man said, ‘I can demolish God’s sanctuary^(F) and rebuild it in three days.’”

⁶² The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?” ⁶³ But^(G) Jesus kept silent.^(H) Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath:^(I) tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”^(J)

⁶⁴ “You have said it,”^[f] Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future^[g] you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^(K)[h]

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed!^(L) Why do we still need witnesses? Look, now you’ve heard the blasphemy!^{(M) 66} What is your decision?”^[i]

They answered, “He deserves death!”^{(N) 67} Then they spit in His face^(O) and beat Him; others slapped Him ⁶⁸ and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who hit You?”^(P)

Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.^(Q) A servant approached him and she said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”

⁷⁰ But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

⁷¹ When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”^(R)

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath,^(S) “I don’t know the man!”

⁷³ After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them, since even your accent^[j] gives you away.”

⁷⁴ Then he started to curse^[k] and to swear with an oath, “I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed, ⁷⁵ and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”^(T) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

⁵³ They^(A) led Jesus away to the high priest,^(B) and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes^(C) convened.^{(D) 54} Peter^(E) followed Him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the temple police,^[a](F) warming himself by the fire.^[b]

⁵⁵ The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin^(G) were looking for testimony against Jesus to put Him to death,^(H) but they could find none. ⁵⁶ For many were giving false testimony^(I) against Him, but the testimonies did not agree. ⁵⁷ Some stood up and were giving false testimony against Him, stating, ⁵⁸ “We heard Him say, ‘I will demolish this sanctuary made by human hands,^(J) and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’” ⁵⁹ Yet their testimony did not agree^(K) even on this.

⁶⁰ Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?” ⁶¹ But He kept silent and did not answer anything.^(L) Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Messiah,^(M) the Son^(N) of the Blessed^(O) One?”

⁶² “I am,”^(P) said Jesus, “and all of you^[c] will see the Son of Man^(Q) seated at the right hand^(R) of the Power and coming with the clouds^(S) of heaven.”^(T)[d]

⁶³ Then the high priest^(U) tore his robes^(V) and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?^{(W) 64} You have heard the blasphemy!^(X) What is your decision?”^[e]

And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death.^{(Y) 65} Then some began to spit on Him, to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, saying, “Prophesy!”^(Z) The temple police^(AA) also took Him and slapped Him.

Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁶ While^(AB) Peter^(AC) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came. ⁶⁷ When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene,^(AD) Jesus.”

⁶⁸ But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about!” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.^[f]

⁶⁹ When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them!”

⁷⁰ But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean!”^[g](AE)

⁷¹ Then he started to curse^[h] and to swear with an oath,^(AF) “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

⁷² Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,^(AG) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep.^[i]

Peter Denies His Lord

⁵⁴ They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter^(A) was following at a distance.

⁶² And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

⁶³ The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.^{(A) 64} After blindfolding Him, they kept^[a] asking, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” ⁶⁵ And they were saying many other blasphemous^(B) things against Him.
