²⁰ When evening came, He was reclining at the table with the Twelve. ²¹ While they were eating, He said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me.”^(A)

²² Deeply distressed, each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

²³ He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl—he will betray Me. ²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about Him,^(B) but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

²⁵ Then Judas, His betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi?”^(C)

“You have said it,” He told him.

Betrayal at the Passover

¹⁷ When^(A) evening came, He arrived with the Twelve.^{(B) 18} While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “I assure you: One of you will betray Me—one who is eating with Me!”

¹⁹ They began to be distressed and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?”

²⁰ He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is dipping bread with Me in the bowl. ²¹ For the Son of Man^(C) will go just as it is written^(D) about Him,^(E) but woe^(F) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

²¹ But^(A) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me!^{(B) 22} For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,^(C) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

²³ So they began to argue^(D) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.
