The Escape to Egypt
Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord *appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”

Herod Slaughters Babies
Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Jesus Foretells His Death
From that time Jesus began to point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day.

Grieving over Jerusalem
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

“Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name.

The Plot to Kill Jesus
When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,

and they plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him.

And He *said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?” But they kept silent.

And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise from the dead.

It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to kill him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!”

For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.”

And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.

But those vine-growers said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’

And they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

Death Plot and Anointing
Now the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him;

saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised on the third day.”

Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.
