When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send word to them and consecrate them, getting up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

As for that night, may darkness seize it; May it not rejoice among the days of the year; May it not come into the number of the months.

Job’s Life Seems Futile

“Is a person not forced to labor on earth, And are his days not like the days of a hired worker?

My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, And they come to an end without hope.

I waste away; I will not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are only a breath.

For we are only of yesterday and know nothing, Because our days on earth are as a shadow.

“Now my days are swifter than a runner; They flee away, they see no good.

Are Your days like the days of a mortal, Or Your years like a man’s year,

Would He not leave my few days alone? Withdraw from me so that I may have a little cheerfulness

Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; And You have set his limits so that he cannot pass.

If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will wait Until my relief comes.

The wicked person writhes in pain all his days, And the years reserved for the ruthless are numbered.

Job Says He Has Become a Proverb

“My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me.

My days are past, my plans are torn apart, The wishes of my heart.

They spend their days in prosperity, And suddenly they go down to Sheol.

Job Says God Seems to Ignore Wrongs

“Why are times not stored up by the Almighty, And why do those who know Him not see His days?

I have kept hold of my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not rebuke any of my days.

“Oh that I were as in months gone by, As in the days when God watched over me;

Just as I was in the days of my youth, When the protection of God was over my tent;

Then I thought, ‘I will die with my family, And I will multiply my days as the sand.

“And now my soul is poured out within me; Days of misery have seized me.

I am seething within and cannot rest; Days of misery confront me.

Let his flesh become fresher than in youth, Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor;

If they listen and serve Him, They will end their days in prosperity, And their years in happiness.
