  1. Then the Lord raised up judges who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them.
  2. Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they committed infidelity with other gods and bowed down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do the same as their fathers.
  3. And when the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them.
  4. But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways.
  5. The First Judge Frees Israel

    But the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to set them free, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
  6. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went to war, the Lord handed over to him Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.
  7. He judged Israel for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
  8. After him, Jair the Gileadite rose up and judged Israel for twenty-two years.
  9. Jephthah, the Ninth Judge

    Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a valiant warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. And Gilead had fathered Jephthah.
  10. So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me. May the Lord, the Judge, judge today between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.’”
  11. Jephthah judged Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
  12. Now Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel after him.
  13. He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirty daughters from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel for seven years.
  14. Now Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel after him; he judged Israel for ten years.
  15. Now Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel after him.
  16. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkeys; and he judged Israel for eight years.
  17. So he judged Israel for twenty years in the days of the Philistines.
  18. Then his brothers and all his father’s household came down and took him, and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah. So he had judged Israel for twenty years.
