Psalm 146-147

Put Not Your Trust in Princes

146 (A)Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord (B)as long as I live;
    (C)I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

(D)Put not your trust in princes,
    (E)in a son of man, in whom there is (F)no salvation.
When (G)his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
    on that very day his plans perish.

(H)Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
    whose (I)hope is in the Lord his God,
(J)who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
(K)who keeps faith forever;
    (L)who executes justice for the oppressed,
    (M)who gives food to the hungry.

(N)The Lord sets the prisoners free;
    (O)the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
(P)The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
    (Q)the Lord loves the righteous.
(R)The Lord watches over the sojourners;
    (S)he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
    but (T)the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

10 (U)The Lord will reign forever,
    your God, O Zion, to all generations.
(V)Praise the Lord!

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147 (W)Praise the Lord!
For (X)it is good to sing praises to our God;
    for (Y)it is pleasant,[a] and (Z)a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord (AA)builds up Jerusalem;
    he (AB)gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals (AC)the brokenhearted
    and (AD)binds up their wounds.
He (AE)determines the number of the stars;
    he (AF)gives to all of them their names.
(AG)Great is our Lord, and (AH)abundant in power;
    (AI)his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord (AJ)lifts up the humble;[b]
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

(AK)Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on (AL)the lyre!
He covers the heavens with clouds;
    he prepares (AM)rain for the earth;
    he makes (AN)grass grow on the hills.
He (AO)gives to the beasts their food,
    and to (AP)the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in (AQ)the strength of the horse,
    nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord (AR)takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who (AS)hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
    Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens (AT)the bars of your gates;
    he blesses your children within you.
14 He (AU)makes peace in your borders;
    he (AV)fills you with the (AW)finest of the wheat.
15 He (AX)sends out his command to the earth;
    his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives (AY)snow like wool;
    he scatters (AZ)frost like ashes.
17 He hurls down his crystals of (BA)ice like crumbs;
    who can stand before his (BB)cold?
18 He (BC)sends out his word, and melts them;
    he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
    his (BD)statutes and rules[c] to Israel.
20 He (BE)has not dealt thus with any other nation;
    they do not know his rules.[d]
(BF)Praise the Lord!

Psalm 111-113

Great Are the Lord's Works

111 [a] (A)Praise the Lord!
I (B)will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
    in the company of (C)the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the (D)works of the Lord,
    (E)studied by all who delight in them.
(F)Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
    and his (G)righteousness endures forever.
He has (H)caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him;
    he (I)remembers his covenant forever.
He has shown his people the power of his works,
    in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are (J)trustworthy;
they are (K)established forever and ever,
    to be performed with (L)faithfulness and uprightness.
He sent (M)redemption to his people;
    he has (N)commanded his covenant forever.
    (O)Holy and awesome is his name!
10 (P)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have (Q)a good understanding.
    His (R)praise endures forever!

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 [b] (S)Praise the Lord!
(T)Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who (U)greatly delights in his commandments!
His (V)offspring will be mighty in the land;
    (W)the generation of the upright will be blessed.
(X)Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his (Y)righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness (Z)for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and (AA)righteous.
It is well with the man who (AB)deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will (AC)never be moved;
    (AD)he will be remembered forever.
He is not (AE)afraid of bad news;
    his (AF)heart is firm, (AG)trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady;[c] he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has (AH)distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his (AI)horn is exalted in honor.
10 The wicked man sees it and is angry;
    he (AJ)gnashes his teeth and (AK)melts away;
    (AL)the desire of the wicked will perish!

Who Is like the Lord Our God?

113 (AM)Praise the Lord!
(AN)Praise, O (AO)servants of the Lord,
    praise the name of the Lord!

(AP)Blessed be the name of the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore!
(AQ)From the rising of the sun to its setting,
    (AR)the name of the Lord is (AS)to be praised!

The Lord is (AT)high above all nations,
    and his (AU)glory above the heavens!
(AV)Who is like the Lord our God,
    who is seated on high,
who (AW)looks far down
    on the heavens and the earth?
He (AX)raises the poor from the dust
    and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them (AY)sit with princes,
    with the princes of his people.
He (AZ)gives the barren woman a home,
    making her the joyous mother of children.
(BA)Praise the Lord!

Amos 1:1-5

The words of Amos, who was among the (A)shepherds[a] of (B)Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel (C)in the days of (D)Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of (E)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years[b] before (F)the earthquake.

Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

And he said:

(G)“The Lord roars from Zion
    and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
(H)the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
    and the (I)top of (J)Carmel withers.”

Thus says the Lord:

(K)“For three transgressions of (L)Damascus,
    and for four, (M)I will not revoke the punishment,[c]
because they have threshed (N)Gilead
    with threshing sledges of iron.
(O)So I will send a fire upon the house of (P)Hazael,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of (Q)Ben-hadad.
I will (R)break the gate-bar of (S)Damascus,
    and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of (T)Aven,[d]
and him who holds the scepter from (U)Beth-eden;
    and the people of (V)Syria shall go into exile to (W)Kir,”
says the Lord.

Amos 1:13-2:8

13 Thus says the Lord:

(A)“For three transgressions of the (B)Ammonites,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because (C)they have ripped open pregnant women in (D)Gilead,
    that they might enlarge their border.
14 So I will kindle a fire in the wall of (E)Rabbah,
    (F)and it shall devour her strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
    (G)with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
15 and (H)their king shall go into exile,
    he and his princes[a] together,”
says the Lord.

Thus says the Lord:

(I)“For three transgressions of (J)Moab,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[b]
because (K)he burned to lime
    the bones of the king of Edom.
So I will send a fire upon Moab,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of (L)Kerioth,
and Moab shall die amid uproar,
    amid shouting and the sound of the trumpet;
(M)I will cut off the ruler from its midst,
    and will kill (N)all its princes[c] with him,”
says the Lord.

Judgment on Judah

Thus says the Lord:

(O)“For three transgressions of Judah,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because (P)they have rejected the law of the Lord,
    and have not kept his statutes,
but (Q)their lies have led them astray,
    those after which their fathers walked.
So (R)I will send a fire upon Judah,
    and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

Judgment on Israel

Thus says the Lord:

(S)“For three transgressions of Israel,
    and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because (T)they sell the righteous for (U)silver,
    and the needy for a pair of sandals—
those who trample the head of the poor (V)into the dust of the earth
    and (W)turn aside the way of the afflicted;
(X)a man and his father go in to the same girl,
    so that my holy name is profaned;
they lay themselves down beside every altar
    on garments (Y)taken in pledge,
and in the house of their God they drink
    the wine of those who have been fined.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning (A)the times and the seasons, brothers,[a] (B)you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that (C)the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then (D)sudden destruction will come upon them (E)as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you (F)are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all (G)children[b] of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then (H)let us not sleep, as others do, but let us (I)keep awake and (J)be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, (K)are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, (L)having put on the breastplate of (M)faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for (N)wrath, but (O)to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (P)who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Luke 21:5-19

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

(A)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, “As for these things that you see, (B)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And they asked him, “Teacher, (C)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” And he said, (D)“See that you are not led astray. For (E)many will come in my name, saying, (F)‘I am he!’ and, (G)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be (H)terrified, for these things (I)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

10 Then he said to them, (J)“Nation will rise against nation, and (K)kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great (L)earthquakes, and in various places (M)famines and pestilences. And there will be (N)terrors and great (O)signs from heaven. 12 But before all this (P)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to (Q)the synagogues and (R)prisons, and you (S)will be brought before (T)kings and (U)governors for my name's sake. 13 (V)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds (W)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for (X)I will give you a mouth and (Y)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or (Z)contradict. 16 You will be delivered up (AA)even by parents and brothers[a] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 (AB)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. 18 But (AC)not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your (AD)endurance you will gain your lives.
