Psalm 25[a]
Of David.
1 In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.(A)
2 I trust in you;(B)
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3 No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame,(C)
but shame will come on those
who are treacherous(D) without cause.
4 Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.(E)
5 Guide me in your truth(F) and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,(G)
and my hope is in you(H) all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,(I)
for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth(J)
and my rebellious ways;(K)
according to your love(L) remember me,
for you, Lord, are good.(M)
5 “Suppose there is a righteous man
who does what is just and right.
6 He does not eat at the mountain(A) shrines
or look to the idols(B) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife
or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.(C)
7 He does not oppress(D) anyone,
but returns what he took in pledge(E) for a loan.
He does not commit robbery(F)
but gives his food to the hungry(G)
and provides clothing for the naked.(H)
8 He does not lend to them at interest
or take a profit from them.(I)
He withholds his hand from doing wrong
and judges fairly(J) between two parties.
9 He follows my decrees(K)
and faithfully keeps my laws.
That man is righteous;(L)
he will surely live,(M)
declares the Sovereign Lord.
10 “Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood(N) or does any of these other things[a] 11 (though the father has done none of them):
“He eats at the mountain shrines.(O)
He defiles his neighbor’s wife.
12 He oppresses the poor(P) and needy.
He commits robbery.
He does not return what he took in pledge.(Q)
He looks to the idols.
He does detestable things.(R)
13 He lends at interest and takes a profit.(S)
Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.(T)
14 “But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:(U)
15 “He does not eat at the mountain shrines(V)
or look to the idols(W) of Israel.
He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.
16 He does not oppress anyone
or require a pledge for a loan.
He does not commit robbery
but gives his food to the hungry(X)
and provides clothing for the naked.(Y)
17 He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor
and takes no interest or profit from them.
He keeps my laws(Z) and follows my decrees.
He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live. 18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.
32 “We tell you the good news:(A) What God promised our ancestors(B) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(C) As it is written in the second Psalm:
34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,
35 So it is also stated elsewhere:
36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(G) he was buried with his ancestors(H) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(I) did not see decay.
38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(J) 39 Through him everyone who believes(K) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(L) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:
