² And ^(A)a leper came to Him and ^[a](B)bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” ³ Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his ^(C)leprosy was cleansed. ⁴ And Jesus *said to him, “^(D)See that you tell no one; but ^(E)go, ^(F)show yourself to the priest and present the ^[b]offering that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

⁵ And ^(G)when ^[c]Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, ⁶ and saying, “^[d]Lord, my ^[e]servant is ^[f]lying ^(H)paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” ⁷ Jesus *said to him, “I will come and heal him.” ⁸ But the centurion said, “^[g]Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just ^[h]say the word, and my ^[i]servant will be healed. ⁹ For I also am a man under ^(I)authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” ¹⁰ Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith ^[j]with anyone in Israel. ¹¹ I say to you that many ^(J)will come from east and west, and ^[k]recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; ¹² but ^(K)the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into ^(L)the outer darkness; in that place ^(M)there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” ¹³ And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; ^[l]it shall be done for you ^(N)as you have believed.” And the ^[m]servant was healed that very ^[n]moment.

Peter’s Mother-in-law and Many Others Healed

^14 (O)When Jesus came into Peter’s ^[o]home, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. ¹⁵ He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and ^[p]waited on Him. ¹⁶ When evening came, they brought to Him many ^(P)who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and ^(Q)healed all who were ill. ¹⁷ This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “^(R)He Himself took our infirmities and ^[q]carried away our diseases.”

Discipleship Tested

¹⁸ Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, ^(S)He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. ^19 (T)Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” ²⁰ Jesus *said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the ^[r]air have ^[s]nests, but ^(U)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” ²¹ Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” ²² But Jesus *said to him, “^(V)Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.”

^23 (W)When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. ²⁴ And behold, there arose ^[t]a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. ²⁵ And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “^(X)Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” ²⁶ He *said to them, “Why are you ^[u]afraid, ^(Y)you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and ^[v]it became perfectly calm. ²⁷ The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Jesus Casts Out Demons

^28 (Z)When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were ^(AA)demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. ²⁹ And they cried out, saying, “^[w](AB)What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before ^[x]the time?” ³⁰ Now there was a herd of many swine feeding at a distance from them. ³¹ The demons began to entreat Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of swine.” ³² And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters. ³³ The herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, ^[y]including what had happened to the ^(AC)demoniacs. ³⁴ And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, ^(AD)they implored Him to leave their region.

¹¹ She *said to Him, “^[a]Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that ^(A)living water? ¹² You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who ^(B)gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” ¹³ Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; ¹⁴ but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^(C)shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to ^(D)eternal life.”

¹⁵ The woman *said to Him, “^[b]Sir, ^(E)give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” ¹⁶ He *said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” ¹⁷ The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; ¹⁸ for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” ¹⁹ The woman *said to Him, “^[c]Sir, I perceive that You are ^(F)a prophet. ^20 (G)Our fathers worshiped in ^(H)this mountain, and you people say that ^(I)in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” ²¹ Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, ^(J)an hour is coming when ^(K)neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. ^22 (L)You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for ^(M)salvation is from the Jews. ²³ But ^(N)an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father ^(O)in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. ²⁴ God is ^[d]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship ^(P)in spirit and truth.” ²⁵ The woman *said to Him, “I know that ^(Q)Messiah is coming (^(R)He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” ²⁶ Jesus *said to her, “^(S)I who speak to you am He.”

²⁷ At this point His ^(T)disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” ²⁸ So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and *said to the men, ²⁹ “Come, see a man ^(U)who told me all the things that I have done; ^(V)this is not ^[e]the Christ, is it?” ³⁰ They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

³¹ Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, “^(W)Rabbi, eat.” ³² But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” ³³ So the ^(X)disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” ³⁴ Jesus *said to them, “My food is to ^(Y)do the will of Him who sent Me and to ^(Z)accomplish His work. ³⁵ Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white ^(AA)for harvest. ³⁶ Already he who reaps is receiving ^(AB)wages and is gathering ^(AC)fruit for ^(AD)life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. ³⁷ For in this case the saying is true, ‘^(AE)One sows and another reaps.’ ³⁸ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

The Samaritans

³⁹ From ^(AF)that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “^(AG)He told me all the things that I have done.” ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. ⁴¹ Many more believed because of His word; ⁴² and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed ^(AH)the Savior of the world.”

⁴³ After ^(AI)the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. ⁴⁴ For Jesus Himself testified that ^(AJ)a prophet has no honor in his own country. ⁴⁵ So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, ^(AK)having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Healing a Nobleman’s Son

⁴⁶ Therefore He came again to ^(AL)Cana of Galilee ^(AM)where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at ^(AN)Capernaum. ⁴⁷ When he heard that Jesus had come ^(AO)out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. ⁴⁸ So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see ^[f](AP)signs and ^(AQ)wonders, you simply will not believe.” ⁴⁹ The royal official *said to Him, “^[g]Sir, come down before my child dies.” ⁵⁰ Jesus *said to him, “^(AR)Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. ⁵¹ As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his ^[h]son was living. ⁵² So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the ^[i]seventh hour the fever left him.” ⁵³ So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and ^(AS)his whole household. ⁵⁴ This is again a ^(AT)second ^[j]sign that Jesus performed when He had ^(AU)come out of Judea into Galilee.

⁵ And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,

⁸ And I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am ^(A)Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.’
