The Tribute Money
24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected (C)the [b]two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay (D)the [c]two-drachma tax?” 25 He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect (E)customs or (F)poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” 26 When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are [d]exempt. 27 However, so that we do not [e](G)offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find [f]a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time
22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man(A) is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him,(B) and on the third day(C) he will be raised to life.”(D) And the disciples were filled with grief.
The Temple Tax
24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax(E) came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25 “Yes, he does,” he replied.
When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes(F)—from their own children or from others?”
26 “From others,” Peter answered.
“Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him. 27 “But so that we may not cause offense,(G) go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
Matthew 20:18-34
New American Standard Bible 1995
18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man (A)will be [a]delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and (B)will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on (C)the third day He will be raised up.”
Preferment Asked
20 (D)Then the mother of (E)the sons of Zebedee came to [b]Jesus with her sons, (F)bowing down and making a request of Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She *said to Him, “Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine (G)may sit one on Your right and one on Your left.” 22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (H)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He *said to them, “(I)My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, (J)but it is for those for whom it has been (K)prepared by My Father.”
24 And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. 25 (L)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 26 It is not this way among you, (M)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as (N)the Son of Man (O)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [c]life a ransom for many.”
Sight for the Blind
29 (P)As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. 30 And two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, (Q)have mercy on us, (R)Son of David!” 31 The crowd sternly told them to be quiet, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, (S)Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 33 They *said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” 34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

A Mother’s Request(H)
20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons(I) came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down,(J) asked a favor of him.
21 “What is it you want?” he asked.
She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”(K)
22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup(L) I am going to drink?”
“We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup,(M) but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant(N) with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(O) 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man(P) did not come to be served, but to serve,(Q) and to give his life as a ransom(R) for many.”
Two Blind Men Receive Sight(S)
29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David,(T) have mercy on us!”
31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.
33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”
34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
