  1. First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

    The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
  2. And within the temple grounds He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
  3. And He made a whip of cords, and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;
  4. Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
  5. The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?”
  6. But He was speaking about the temple of His body.
  7. Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.”
  8. But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to teach.
  9. Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.
  10. And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began teaching them.
  11. These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because His hour had not yet come.
  12. Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and left the temple grounds.
  13. it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of Solomon.
  14. So they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, “What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?”
  15. Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret.
